SUCCESS STORY

Large volume, single cell-line production – Cellmate

The fully automated process takes cell culture processing from the lab to the mass production line. The key is the Stäubli TX60 Cleanroom robot which is equipped to handle large production volumes and ensure consistency batch after batch.

CUSTOMER BENEFITS

  • Scale up without process change
  • Consistency of product – day to day, batch to batch
  • Operator safety – elimination of repetitive strain injury risk to staff
  • Dramatic reduction in process development time

TASK

Cellmate takes cell culture processing from the lab bench to high volume without process change

Cellmate from TAP Biosystems – now part of the Sartorius Stedim Biotech Group – is an established system that fully automates all the processes needed to culture cells in roller bottles and T-flasks. It takes cell culture processing from the lab bench to high volume production without process change.

The latest generation of Cellmate is supplied with software to support the validation of the system, if used in processes that require compliance with a 21 CFR Part 11.

By using Stäubli TX60 series Cleanroom robots, Cellmate automates:

  • Cell seeding
  • Enzymatic and mechanical harvesting
  • Cell sheet rinsing
  • Media changing
  • Transient transfection
  • Harvesting by mechanical scraping
  • Bottle gassing

Originally developed for the demanding GMP environment, over 90 Cellmates have now been installed across the range of cell culture applications in manufacturing and research. Installations include Serono, Amgen, Avigen and Novartis Animal Health.

The various applications include:

  • High throughput screening
  • Therapeutic proteins
  • Cell therapies
  • Gene therapies
  • Veterinary viral vaccines
  • Tissue engineering
